It can be easy to get caught up in our day-to-day roles of employees, friends, wives, daughters, mothers, etc. and neglect the most important role of all – ourselves. So often these days we hear people suffering from burnout, especially millennials, as we are tackling not only 9-5 jobs, but also are budding entrepreneurs, fitness enthusiasts and beauty gurus. We try to do it all and often, we suffer for this. It may seem counterproductive to schedule time to relax when you’re schedule is solidly booked, but taking time to recharge your batteries will actually help you accomplish more, gain a new perspective and help you be a happier, healthier you.
I recently decided to drop everything and have some quality “me” time one Saturday morning. I had spent the week working 9 hours days behind a computer, only to come home to spend 3-4 hours a night behind the computer blogging or working on school assignments. I couldn’t fathom the idea of spending my Saturday morning, once again, staring at a screen so I decided not to. As simple as that, I decided to spend the morning on ME.
Here’s how to take full advantage of your ME time:
Find your sanctuary. I believe everyone should have a sanctuary in their house, where they can retreat when they need someone alone time. Mine is my master bathroom, which my husband so graciously allows me to have all as my own. It’s massive, with a big Jacuzzi tub, huge counter, separate shower, and big window overlooking some green space behind our property.
Relax. For me, relaxing involves taking a steaming hot bath. I turn on the jets, turn up my tunes (currently on a Sleeping At Last kick), light some candles and just relax. I recommend adding some sort of personal development component to this as well. This could be as simple as listening to a guided meditation using an app on your phone, tuning into a podcast, or if you’re like me, read a book. Currently on my reading list are: May Cause Miracles and Adventures for Your Soul.
Give yourself an at home facial. This is one of my favourite things to do and it doesn’t even have to take up much of your time. Have an extra ten minutes in your day? Spend it rejuvenating your skin with some exfoliation and a mask. I recently discovered Skinceuticals, a skincare line loaded with antioxidants and medical grade ingredients. When I want the spa experience without the cost, I use my Skinceuticals Hydrating B5 Masque. This is a great weekly hydration treatment that uses high concentrations of hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 to re-establish the water balance critical for maintaining skin metabolic functions at optimal levels. I follow up with the Serum 10 AOX+ which neutralizes free radicals, defends against environmental damage and helps fight the appearance of accelerated aging. The best part of this serum is that is ideal for sensitive skin types like mine.
Doll yourself up. Even if you have nowhere to go, spend some time having fun with makeup. Even better – spend some time out at the mall picking up some new makeup! I recently picked up a ton of fun items from Hard Candy. Since their products are so affordable, I was able to come home with basically an entire face full of products to try out. I spent my Saturday morning creating a fun and natural day time look that had me feeling glowy and pretty all day.
Recreate this look yourself using:
#1: Top Ten Trendsetter Eyeshadow Palette in Birthday Suit – Sweep one of the lighter shades across your lids, use the dark brown shade in your outer corner and blend out into the crease using the lighter brown shade.
#2: Brows Now in Medium Dark – Use the wax to tame and set unruly brows. Sweep the long-wearning powder across brows in short, flicking motions and lift the brow bone using the cream highlighter. Apply a bit of the highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes.
#3: Glow All the Way Baked Bronzer in Tiki – Use this baked, marbleized bronzer to give your cheeks an all over warmth and glow.
#4: 1,000 Lashes in Midnight Black – Add some volume to your lashes with this mascara. Infused with volume building fibres that thicken, separate and lengthen, this mascara acts like instant lash extensions.
#5: Plumping Serum Gel Stick in Idolized – Finish off the look with a pop of colour. This lipstick contains mango butter for super comfort and shine with lasting hydration and its exclusive plumping serum system plumps the lips to minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Finding the time for you isn’t always easy, but it is necessary. Even if you can’t try out all of my suggestions, make time to try one each week, even if you can only set aside half an hour. Spending time on yourself will only positively impact your life and allow you to be your happiest and best self.
