No matter where you find yourself on New Year’s Eve, you will always be able to feel the strange sort of happy worldwide ambiance. Everywhere you look people are anticipating a brighter and better new year, and the good vibes are inescapable. It’s a time for fresh starts, a new you, and of course, your New Year’s Resolutions.

But what is it about resolutions that make them so completely impossible to fulfill? It seems like every year we convince ourselves that This Time We Mean It and every year we disappoint ourselves. Why do we have a tradition of starting the year with a lie? Well don’t despair this year, because with these five tips should help you come through on your New Year’s Resolution!

First of all, it’s crucial to keep your motivation to conquer your resolution alive and well. Keep inspiration on hand and indulge in it often. This doesn’t sound too hard, since it’s so much fun, but it’s pretty easy to let your motivation peter out. Is your resolution to shave time off your mile? Watch videos of world class athletes doing their best to inspire you to do yours. There’s no reason not to dream big. The important thing is to take the time to keep yourself motivated. Feed the fire that makes you want to be your better self, because that’s the only way you’ll ever find the passion to persevere. You know what you want, and you can get there if you work hard, so remind yourself of that and think of how sweet victory will taste. Keep motivated and you’re on your way!

Step two is to plan. What are you going to do? When are you going to do it? Are you going to learn to cook? Now that you’re motivated, time to hash out the details. Put aside time to practice, find some recipes you want to master, start researching tricks of the trade, and remember to write all of this down so you can look back on it later.

Now, hand in hand with planning comes the third step, preparation. You’ve decided what you want to cook, so go buy the ingredients. You’re set on that faster mile, so break out those running shoes. Whatever your goal, make sure you have everything you need in order to accomplish it. By this step you’ll be motivated to persevere, know when and how you’ll do it and be properly equipped, making you unstoppable! Now you can begin working towards your goal and feel great about it every step of the way. But there are still two more steps you need to follow in order to keep up the great work.

Step four: Reminders. It is so easy to forget once, then twice, and before you know it all your effort is slipping away. But there’s no reason to let something this trivial get in your way. Find ways to remind yourself to keep on keeping on. Check your plan and figure out how often and when you should remind yourself to get down to New Year’s resolution business. You want to try a new recipe but you keep forgetting to go to the grocery store? Happens to the best of us. But take matters into your own hands. Leave yourself post-it notes, make a reminder your phone background, write it in your planner, set yourself alarms, and leave your running shoes in the middle of your bedroom floor so you can’t ignore them! Sometimes it really is that simple. Now there’s only one more thing to remember.

The final tip is the easiest of all, but the one we all seem to forget the most. You have a goal, you’re working hard, but all of us are only human. Sometimes we cheat or forget or think to give up all together, and that’s why the final tip is to cut yourself some slack. Nobody starts on something and succeeds right away, and you’re definitely going to have bad days. If your stops trying for a day or a week or a month, it doesn’t mean that you’ve failed. You just have to allow yourself some slip ups and some days off without being too hard on yourself. Nobody’s perfect, so don’t let missteps discourage you. Pick up where you left off, and with these tips, conquer your New Year’s Resolution!

So far so good!
