I love parties, especially ones with themes and ones that I can help plan. My vintage themed bridal shower was a huge hit and has been pinned thousands of times, but that was one party that I was pretty hands off with. I mean, I had my say in the theme, but it was my amazing mother and bridesmaids that executed the event.

When it came to my baby shower, I knew that I wanted to get in on the planning. Plus, I’m having a baby girl so I mean…the sky is the limit in terms of how much glitter, frills and pink I could use. Together with my mom, we planned a fun, but on budget, pink and gold baby shower for my future fashionista. Instead of just sharing pictures from the shower, I’m throwing in 8 easy steps to help you plan a baby shower.

Pick a date. Take into consideration how you have been feeling and how you could be feeling, how far along you want to be and the season that you want it in. I chose to have mine in the second trimester while I was still feeling good, rather than waiting until the end when I could feel too fatigued. Plus, I wanted a few months to through my gifts and determine what I still needed to purchase after the shower was over.

Send out invites. I sent out my invitations early because my shower was during the summer when people’s schedules tend to fill up fast! When I chose my invites, I didn’t even know if I was having a boy or girl or what my shower theme would be.

I went to Minted for my invites because I have used them a bunch in the past for thank you cards and artwork. Their baby section had so many adorable invitations it actually took me a full week to decide.

Funny enough, I had so many compliments on the unique and fun invites I ended up going with. I even had someone write in my baby shower card that they loved the fun and modern invite I sent out!

The design of shower invites I ended up choosing are no longer available on Minted, but this is what they look like (details are generic off the Minted sample, not my actual personal info in case you guys wanted to stalk me, sorry no dice).

Minted is definitely a no-brainer for invites as they have everything for every kind of baby shower you could dream of. Right now I’m shopping for my thank you cards and again, it’s not easy feat!

Pick a theme. Pinterest is a great resource for anyone looking for awesome ideas for baby showers. I ended up going with pink and gold as my colour scheme once I found out I was having a girl. It was pretty easy to execute this theme, even on a budget, and I ended up doing some DIY projects like the glitter mason jars and then focusing on a few cute accents like pink gerbera daisies and these intricately designed cookies by The Perfect Bite Bake Shoppe (I got soooo many compliments on these!)

Give out creative favours. Favours at a baby shower can be hard. You want to give your guests something thoughtful for coming, you want to be creative, but you also don’t want to spend an arm and a leg doing so, especially if you have a  lot of guests coming. I opted for a pink nail polish, which I thought was something most guests would use, and had these fun tags made up by Etsy Shop Crafts for Abby.

Games. Everyone loves some fun games at a baby shower. My favourite at my shower was the Price is Right game, where everyone had to guess the cost of a number of basic baby items like Vaseline, pacifiers and baby food. The person closest to the actual total won a prize. A sweet surprise my mom did for me at my shower was hand out each guest a page that said “Wishes for Baby” (you can find a similar one on Pinterest here). She gave them to me at the next day and it was so fun and special to read everyone’s well wishes and funny comments.

Food. You want to provide food that is easy for guests to grab and enjoy during the shower. We opted for Italian catering and had pasta, salad, buns and potatoes. We had a dessert platter and fruit instead of a cake and I found this went over really well – all the desserts got eaten up! For drink we provided sparkling water, pink lemonade and coffee/tea.

Photos. I was lucky enough that a friend of mine volunteered to take pictures for me at my shower. I was so glad she did because she captured so many great moments. At the end of the shower she made a little backdrop corner where I could get pictures taken with my guests. One thing I would do differently is that I would have created a fun little corner with a photo-worthy backdrop so pictures could be taken easily throughout the shower with guests, instead of us whipping one up at the very end after a lot of guests had left. Some fun, inexpensive props like chalkboard signs or baby items would be a fun addition too.

If you don’t have someone taking pictures for you, give your phone to a guest and ask them if they wouldn’t mind snapping a few during the event. Believe me, it will go by so fast you’ll be happy to have some memories captured.

Pampered Yourself. I leave this one to the end because this isn’t for everyone. For me, I was feeling a bit self-conscious about my body (you can read why here) and decided to treat myself to a new outfit. I headed to my local Thyme Maternity and picked up this adorable and very in-style pale pink dress. I also got my makeup done for the shower and I am so glad I did because I looked like a million bucks. If you’re in the Niagara area check out Lianne Mascia, she is a miracle worker. After I got all dolled up, I felt great about myself and it allowed me to feel more comfortable posing for pictures and just letting my guard down in general.
