When we moved into our home in October, we knew that it had two previous owners. The house was clean, in good shape and, for the most part, painted in neutral colours. The main floor was a neutral beige, similar to the Benjamin Moore shade Balboa Mist that I had in our old house so I was pleased with that. If you follow along with the blog, you know that I did do a pretty big makeover to the plain dining room, revamping it into a chic, modern space.
The upstairs was another story. Thankfully the hallway was painted with that neutral beige, but the bedrooms and bathrooms proved to need some work. Our master, which can only be described as the shade of yellowing teeth, needed an overhaul and is a current work-in-progress (excited to share this black and white themed room once its completed!). One of the bedrooms is a pale pink, ballerina themed room, our office is an off-white with scuffed walls and finally, saving the best for last – our guest room was a lime green.
In an effort to get settled, we opted to put our stuff from our old guest room into the new one. That meant navy and white floral bedding with gold accents against LIME GREEN walls with shiny, green curtains. The only good thing about all of this? It made for a pretty dramatic before picture.
Now anyone who has moved before knows that it isn’t cheap. After signing on for a giant mortgage, perhaps dealing with some minor repairs, moving costs and gallons of paint, your budget can become depleted fairly quickly. We found that we were in the same boat, but still wanted to update a few room right away, the guest room being one of them.
So where do I shop when I want big changes on a small budget? Giant Tiger of course. In the past, I’ve been a big fan of their shoes and workout gear, but never ventured into their home decor section. Boy, was I surprised! Giant Tiger stocks everything from curtains to bedding to fun home accents, all for a fraction of the cost of other home decor stores. I was able to pick up everything from paint, bedding, curtains, side table, lighting and accents and have money left over to work on transforming other rooms in my house.
Okay, let’s back track a bit and let me share with you how I decided on my guest room decor. It all started with wall colour. I wanted something serene and relaxing, but not boring. My in-laws will be the main users of this room and they visit us from Ottawa, which takes them around six hours. I wanted something that would be relaxing for them after a long day on the road so I opted for a blue/grey shade from Blue Moose Paint.
Have you heard of Blue Moose Paint? It is a Canadian paint company that creates affordable, mid-grade level paint that is created from refurbished post-consumer paint. Yes, it’s recycled paint! So it’s good for the environment and your wallet. Every can of Blue Moose paint sold helps to keep paint out of our landfills, dumped into our water systems or incinerated into the air. Giant Tiger currently stocks four colours of this paint. I was a bit skeptical since I said I am a lover of Benjamin Moore, but I found that Blue Moose Paint went on smooth, dried quickly and covered that hideous green in two coats.
Since the walls were a bit darker, I opted for lighter pastel shades for the rest of the room. A beautiful white bed spread with accents of purple, blue and green and some fun accent pillows added some lightness and colour to the space. A cute, gray side table allowed me to add some personal touches including some perfume bottles, vintage frame and this fun light (extra points for being battery operated!).
To add some interest to the walls, I added some grey curtain panels, which have a beautiful sheen running through them and some small mirror on the walls. Since we are using Mark’s bed from his bachelor days in our guest room, the mirrors over the bed hide the fact that bed is a little on the plain side. In place of a fancy headboard, these mirrors visually add some drama to the wall and look pretty over the bed.
I am so happy with how this room turned out. It is a calm and inviting space with colours that work cohesively together. Thanks to Blue Moose Paint and Giant Tiger I am now a believer that decor can be done on a budget and you can still be left with a room that looks like it came out of a magazine. I was so excited to have my in-laws test out our new guest room this past weekend when they visited us for Family Day! They loved it and said they’ll be stopping by Giant Tiger soon to pick up some new decor pieces. You can get your own design inspiration by browsing more decor ideas at GiantTiger.com
