It’s that time of year when the weather is warming up and we start to get the itch to clean. To be honest I never seem to get that itch, but regardless, cleaning is a necessity of life, so let’s talk about how to do it green. You might wonder- what’s the big deal about green cleaning? I did. Did you know that over 100,000 children under the age of 6 are sickened by household cleaners every year?

Do a quick google search or better yet think back through your memory. Most of us have scary stories around children and cleaners of one kind of another. I do! My two boys got together one afternoon and decided that the Goo-Gone adhesive cleaner looked attractively like Kool-Aid so the one dared the other to drink it. My then 3 year old took the dare. Twice. Luckily for me the type of Goo-Gone we had was not one that required stomach pumping. To preempt angry diatribes of my poor parenting let me state that all my cleaning supplies are on the top shelf of a lock closet. The Goo-Gone was out for 30 minutes tops while I was using it. Sometimes despite our extreme efforts, kids find the things we don’t want them to. They are quite resourceful that way. says “Many household cleaners contain chemicals, some of which are toxic.  These chemicals may cause short-term health problems like skin and eye irritation when you use them and they may have long-term health impacts as well.” Respiratory issues seemed to be the top concern, but certain chemicals found in some cleaners may interfere with the development of neurological, endocrine and immune systems. That’s a big deal! We do so much to protect our children and then we may unknowingly be exposing them to chemicals that can negatively affect their long term health. They don’t need to drink it like my boys did. All they need to do is be around it and breathe it in.

So here is my dilemma, I have 7 kids and I want my house clean, so what do I do? Well, after learning about the mental and physical benefits of essential oils, I learned that they were powerful for green cleaning too! Here is a snapshot of what they can do:

Creating cleaning products with essential oils is extremely easy! Most of the ingredients you already have like baking soda, white vinegar, salt or olive oil. It’s also CHEAPER than buying the normal products at the store! Now you have no excuses. Green cleaning is SAFER, CHEAPER and EFFECTIVE.

Here are a few of my favorite recipes:

I love cleaning with essential oils because not only do they work, but they uplift my mood while I’m doing it. As I mentioned before, I’m not a natural cleaner, so to see me cleaning with a smile is a quite the feat. Have a grumpy child? Put them to work cleaning and see how it changes their mood. Hey, it’s worth a try and if nothing else, you’ll have a cleaner house!

Most essential oils on the market today fakes- even though they say 100% pure on the package. They aren’t worth your time or money! If you’d like to know what essential oils I personally use and how to get them at wholesale prices, email me at for an immediate response.
