On Saturday night, I was given the opportunity to attend Prive’s 613 Night Market at the Ottawa Convention Centre. It can only be described as a hip, urban bazaar featuring the best chefs in the city, unique vendors and live music all under one very chic roof.
Although the event was going on all day, Mark and I decided to go around 6:00 p.m. With cash in hand and our appetites ready to go, we were happy to be on the guest list and able to skip the lines. We were greeted with a row of cash bars and a DJ spinning music.
Entering the market area, the immediate smell of the delicious food took our senses into overdrive. There was so much to look at and we barely knew where to begin. Since I had been following all the tweets via #613NightMarket, I already had an idea of what I wanted to eat so we beelined it to The Grilled Cheeserie stand and both got a Buffalo Chicken Grilled Cheese. With Frank’s Hot Sauce and Ranch dressing, this grilled cheese was beyond delicious.
The great thing about the food at 613 Night Market was that everything was priced between $1-$5, allowing you to go around and try a variety of different things. There were restaurants and food trucks from all over the city represented and foods from all cultures available.
After the grilled cheese, we decided on some pulled pork sliders from Churchill’s. The slider was a perfect size and the pulled pork was cooked perfectly.
We took a break from the food to check out some of the vendors, and I was immediately drawn to Infinite Purpose’s booth. Beautiful handmade necklaces stamped with inspirational words on antique silver spoons, I was drooling over them! There were so many different sizes and styles to choose from and all the pendants came with a chain (there were a few different lengths to choose from).
One of the pendants quickly caught my eye. A large spoon with Follow Your Heart on it. These are the words I live by and the reason for a lot of my major life decisions. I needed it! Mark saw how much I loved it and whipped out his credit card to purchase it for me. The women running the booth were so awesome and helped me pick out the right length of chain to go with my new pendant. Needless to say, I put it on right away and have been wearing it ever since.
After this brief pitstop, and an even longer one at the Drake General Store booth (CBC toques and other Canadian goodies!), it was time for more food. Green Papaya really hit it out of the park with their chicken pad thai tacos. This was my favourite food item that I had at 613 Night Market. Rumour has it there will be a poutine version of this taco at the Spark Street Poutine Fork Off next weekend.
We took a break to sit down and have a drink – beer for Mark and white wine for me. This was a great time to people watch. The event was packed with people of all ages and everyone looked like they were having a great time.
To end off our night, we both knew we wanted Hot Cream Holes. The line was super long, but it was completely worth it. Mark got the Plain Jane, a warm sugar donut with vanilla ice cream and I got the Sweet Salty Sue, a warm sugar donut with vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce and sea salt. Drool-worthy!
613 Night Market was the perfect way to showcase some of the best of the best in Ottawa. Mark and both had a fantastic time and I am looking for to the next 613 Night Market happening in the summer of 2015.
Editor’s Note: Thank you to Prive for putting Mark and I on the guest list and for hosting such a phenomenal event.
